Goddess Kamakshi is considered to be the representation of Shri Vidya - Shri Lalita Maha Tripurasundari - she reigns supreme in Kanchi. Kanchipuram is one of the sacred cities of Devi worship. The name Kamatchi means "She whose eyes awaken desire, or She who has beautiful eyes". Devi has many different names depending on where in India she is worshiped. In Madurai she is referred to as Meenakshi, in Chidambaram, Shivakami, in Kanchipuram she is revered as Kamatchi and in Kerala she is Known as the Goddess Rajarajeswari. In each city her likeness takes on different aspects as you can see by the variety of poses of Devi. As Meenakshi she stands holding a parrot. As Shivakami standing next to the Nataraja figure and sitting with sugarcane and parrot she is known as Kamatchi.
